Microbial bioburden in the environment has an impact on the risk of Healthcare Associated Infections (HAIs). Two disinfectants currently in the market—one, a novel disinfectant designed to provide continuously active disinfection for 24 hours—were studied for their ability to impact bioburden on patient bed rails. While each disinfectant was able to control bioburden for the first hour, the novel disinfectant with continuously active disinfection was found superior at all time points studied (i.e. 1 hour, 6 hours, and 24 hours after application). Utilizing this first of its kind technology with continuously active disinfection provides an opportunity to limit the re-contamination/re-colonization of bacteria on surfaces. This technology provides the infection control community with an innovative solution to reduce microbial bioburden for up to 24 hours while addressing limitations of today’s standard disinfectants.
